Maypole Dance at Beetham in Westmorland c.1905

This is a scene that is normally associated with May Day or Pentecost. However, it is likely that this photograph was taken during a two-day bazaar held at Beetham during August 1905. Many of the outdoor events were held in the grounds of Ashton House, the funds being raised contributing towards the costs of a new school. The Maypole Dance was supervised by Mrs. Jennet Frances Frith-Hudson, resident of Ashton House, along with Miss Mary Vickers, schoolmistress and organist of the parish church. Music during the bazaar was provided by the Carnforth Brass Band.¹
