Ashington Colliery in Northumberland c.1913

Dating from around 1913, this photograph shows Ashington Colliery, one of the most celebrated mining operations in the UK due to the people and events associated with the town. It was at Ashington that a group of miners would become popularly known as "The Pitmen Painters." One of the most famous footballers, Jackie Milburn, once worked here as an apprentice fitter. The pit closed in March 1988 after around 150 years of extraction. The colliery once employed over 3,000 men.¹
