Bexley Heath now forms part of Greater London but when this photograph was taken in the mid-1950s the town was in the county of Kent. The scene today on The Broadway is very different. The clock tower, erected to commemorate the coronation of King George V, still stands. Slightly out of shot to the left was the Lord Bexley, a pub operated by Truman's. Across the road is the Broadway Stores of the provisions merchants Penny, Son & Parker Limited. The latter were the son and son-in-law of Alfred John Penney, the director of the business. The car in the foreground is now quite a rare vehicle. There are very few surviving examples of the Vauxhall Cresta E model that was manufactured in 1955.
