Railway Hotel on High Street at Grays Thurrock c.1912

The Railway Hotel traded as the Pullman Tavern towards the end of its days as a public-house. The building, a few metres from the level crossing, now forms part of a retail and residential development. For much of the Victorian era the pub was run by John Howell, who also served as a churchwarden and overseer of the parish. On his death in 1896, it was reported that "he was well-known among the poor for his kindly assistance, financial and otherwise, in the distribution of various charities in connection with the Grays Parish Church." ¹
