High Street junction at East Ham with a view of the Denmark Arms c.1912

Dating from the early years of King George V's reign, this photograph was captured from inside the gateway to the Town Hall at East Ham, the lens looking towards the crossroads and the Denmark Arms, a flagship building once operated by Taylor Walker & Co. The Denmark Arms has gone through a sticky patch of late and I was unable to access the interior. Apparently, a key reason for the loss in trade is the exodus of West Ham United to the London Stadium. The pub is listed in the Campaign for Real Ale's London Regional Inventory of Pub Interiors of Special Historic Interest. A notable feature is the skylight in the former billiard room which also has a screened servery. The building is in two parts, the older section erected in the Victorian era, and a large extension along the High Street going up in the early Edwardian period. The date of 1903 can be seen at the base of a shallow corbel. It looks like the postman was about to deliver the mail to the Town Hall.
